When he went downstairs, Rhiannon handed him his nephew with the instructions, “I’ll make breakfast;, you change his bum; nappy bag’s in the lounge.”

They ate breakfast companionably, Mal looking up the times of trains back to Cardiff, London and Tunbridge Wells while Rhiannon spooned glop into Emyr’s mouth.

“When do you get time to iron sheets?” Mal asked, looking round at the kitchen, which was already beginning to untidy itself. There was a full basket of damp washing to go on the line, and he could hear the machine spinning in the utility room next door. Emyr was already wriggling in his highchair, getting bored of eating and ready for his next adventure.

Rhiannon laughed. “Laundry service, Mal. We only keep that room for guests, and I bundle the sheets up and send them out. You know what, I quite like this housewife-and-mother gig, but it’s bloody exhausting and I’ll take any help on offer.”

Huw came back in time to share breakfast and cuddle his son before hitting the sack. Mal thought his brother looked surprisingly cheerful for someone who had just finished a twelve-hour night shift.

“I’ll drop you at the station, Maldi,” he said, and refused to take no for an answer, though it was only a fifteen-minute walk. They sat in Huw’s car in a no parking zone outside the station, and Mal told his brother that he’d decided not to visit their dad.

“Good choice,” Huw said. “I’m thinking I won’t go any more either. Between you and me, I’m looking for a transfer, somewhere closer to you, as it goes. Rhi misses Sasha, and there’s nothing much keeping us here.”

Mal’s heart lifted at the thought of his brother moving to north Wales, and of being able to see Emyr grow up, and he said as much.

“We want loads of kids,” Huw said with a big grin. “And Sasha says Daniel is an excellent childminder, so where else would we go?”
